Drawing is at the heart of my practice. I take small sketchbooks with me into the landscape and spend time really looking at the view, drawing it in great detail. For me, drawing is a way of slowing down and becoming immersed in a place — noticing the shapes, textures, marks and small details that might otherwise be missed.

These sketches become the foundation for my paintings. Back in the studio, I work from them to develop the landscape through colour, contrast, texture and mark-making. The drawings provide a connection to the place, while the paintings give me the freedom to respond to it in a more expressive and intuitive way.
